What will agricultural production look like in the era of artificial intelligence?
QU Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), emphasizes the importance of AI in agricultural production in an exclusive Dialogue with SFC journalist.
“AI can improve the efficiency and the quality. Data can rationalize all the decisions and solutions,” QU Dongyu said. “There is less input and less negative environmental impact. And farmers can benefit more. China did very well in the past years.”
About 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, or 9.1 percent of the world’s population, and that number is projected to decrease only to 582 million by 2030, far short of the Zero Hunger goal for that year, the Director-General said.
Looking ahead, Qu Dongyu believes that the pace of transformation of the global agricultural and food system must be accelerated to develop in a more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable direction. This is a common responsibility of the world and an inevitable choice to meet current challenges.
Qu Dongyu took office on 1 August 2019 as the ninth Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and was re-elected for a second four-year term on 2 July 2023.
